A self-tapping screw is designed to create its own hole in wood, plastic or metal materials as it is being driven (it does not necessarily require a pilot hole). Tapping screws are beneficial in applications that involve consistent maintenance and are especially helpful when two different materials are being attached together. The square drive on this tapping screw reduces driver slippage and allows for more driving power than a Phillips head.
